Cyprus Tennis – reviews singles tournament at Aphrodite Hills – Tennis in Cyprus

Friday nights have never been the same since Aphrodite Hills introduced its Friday Night Fights (https://cyprustennis.wordpress.com/2010/07/28/friday-night-fights/).  The regular singles tournament attracts players of varying levels, ages and nationalities.  Last week, France won.  This week, Cyprus was number 1 and the winner was a junior who beat all comers and is definitely destined for great things.  He was given no special treatment, there were no handicaps given and he blew everyone away.

Played with normal balls, the singles matches are up to 10 points, tie break style.  The players are split into groups and each player plays everyone else in the group.  This means that each of us had to play about 5-6 matches.  It’s fast, there’s not much time to warm up and get focused, but it’s probably great practice for someone like me who takes a set to get into the game usually.  It’s also perfectly suited to the weather as playing at 5pm, the sun is still quite hot.  This time I was focused so in fact I played the new Champion in the final.  I’m not going to embarrass myself by revealing the score, but suffice it to say that I need more lessons!
