Cyprus Tennis Speaks To The “Nomads”

Cyprus Tennis – met up with the regular Paphos Tennis Group at Aphrodite Hills – 1 November 2010 – Tennis in Cyprus

Tennis is certainly growing in popularity in Cyprus, especially at the grass roots level.  There is still much to be done to improve the adult game though, especially in attracting more female players so the women’s tennis takes off.  With adults, expats constitute a fairly large proportion of the players, although most of them play just for pleasure, not competing.

One group of expats call themselves the “nomads”.  They are group of tennis players from Pafos (Paphos) who play every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning and have moved from one tennis club or tennis courts to another over the last six years, but hope they have finally found their home at Aphrodite Hills.  They have been playing there now for about one and a half years.  Jane Toulson started it and they now have about 18 regular tennis players from England, Scotland, Ireland and France.

The "Nomads" at play

They play mixed doubles on Mondays and Wednesdays, changing over every 20 minutes.  On Wednesdays they play Mens and Womens doubles which is slightly more competitive.  It’s purely social tennis so they don’t really pay that much atention to the score – the focus is on havng fun.
